The Water Heater Is How Old?
Age is a big consideration when you’re trying to decide between repairing (maybe not for the first time) and replacing your water heater. As water heaters age, they become more prone to failure and less cost-efficient, and the average lifespan of a water heater is 8-12 years. So if your water heater is passed that 8-year mark, it might be a better idea to replace it than to repair it. You’ll end up paying for repairs now, and probably more later, in addition to higher energy costs as the efficiency winds down.
Have Your Seen Your Energy Bill?
Speaking of energy efficiency, before you decide to repair the heater you should check out your energy bill. Water heaters account for up to 25% of home energy costs. If installing a newer, more energy efficient model can decrease those energy costs, this might be your best option. After all, those energy costs add up, and the savings you’ll see could cancel out the cost of a new heater before too long.
Does Your Hot Water Run Out?
A common complaint against old water heaters is that they don’t deliver as much hot water as they did in the past. This is usually due to sediment buildup of limescale and other minerals that precipitate out of the water when it is heated. These materials build up in the water and eventually settle on the burners, decreasing their performance. If this is the case with your water heater, it is time to move on to a new model.
Is There a Leak?
Do a visual inspection of your water heater for signs of a leak. These signs could be water drips or puddles, corrosion, or sludge, especially around the base, fittings, and connections. This is a good thing to do even if you’re not noticing other problems right now. It is best to catch a leak early before it turns into a plumbing emergency. If your water heater has a leak, it is time for a new one.
