Broken or Dirty Fixtures
Floating debris can cause damage to your plumbing fixtures or just cake them in dirt that looks unsightly. If damaged, you’ll likely just need to replace the part but either way, cleaning is a necessity. Use some diluted bleach and make sure your faucets and showerheads are disassembled, soaked in a cleaning mixture, then put back together for use.
Clogged Drains
Floodwater usually contains some amount of dirt and salt. Once the water is gone, it can leave that nasty residue behind. Sometimes the drains in your home that ended up covered in floodwater get clogged up because of this. Typically, you just need to use a plunger or plumbing snake to get the job done yourself, but if plumbing isn’t in your wheelhouse, let your plumber know.
Broken Pipes
Broken pipes can occur either in the home or underground. If your pipes in your home end up cracked or damaged, it may take a good while after the flood before you realize. Once you’ve recovered from all the water damage, be sure to look for any newly formed puddles because that may be a sign that your pipes were damaged. Shut off the water at your valve and schedule an inspection.
Sometimes pipes can also break underground. Buried water and waste lines are susceptible to damage if the standing water caused by floods gets too heavy. If you notice any sinkholes in your yard after the flooding is done with, that may be a sign that your underground pipes have collapsed.
