If they won’t tell you the details of their license, assume that they don’t have one and move on. They also should have insurance so that their work is covered and any accidents that happen while they’re in your home don’t fall to your home owner’s insurance.
How Long Have You Been In Business?
If they’ve been in business for a long time, there’s a better chance that they offer good and reliable service. Today, with consumer reviews being so easy to post publicly, especially when the outcome is bad, tradesmen who don’t do a good job don’t tend to stick around for decades.
What Are Your Specialties?
Often, different plumbers have different specialties, like plumbing remodeling or plumbing maintenance. Ask your plumber candidate what their specialties are, if any, and what the other plumbers at the company specialize in (if applicable). It is good to know what you have access to, even if you don’t need those services right now.
What Is Your Average Response Time?
Nobody likes to think that they have a plumbing emergency in their future, but it is important to have a sense of how quickly they could respond if you do. Even if your problem is not a major failed sump pump or ruptured water heater, having a plumber who can get there quickly could mean the difference between a small nuisance and a big mess.
