Common Water Heater Problems and When to Call a Plumber

Mahon Plumbing Water Heater Problems

Dealing with water heater problems is never a fun experience, so you should know when it’s time to call a plumber.

Water heaters are an essential component of every home, providing hot water for showers, laundry, and cleaning. However, like any other appliance, water heaters can develop issues over time, leading to inconvenience, frustration, and potential damage. While some water heater problems can be resolved with minor adjustments, others require professional intervention.

No Hot Water

One of the most obvious signs of a water heater problem is a lack of hot water. If your heater isn’t delivering any hot water, it could be due to several reasons:

  • Electric Water Heaters: A common cause could be a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Before calling a plumber, check your electrical panel to see if you can restore power to the heater.
  • Gas Water Heaters: If you have a gas water heater, the problem could be a failed pilot light. If you’re familiar with the process, you can relight the pilot light. However, if you try this and still don’t get hot water, there may be a larger issue, such as a malfunctioning gas valve or a faulty thermocouple.

When to Call a Plumber: If resetting the circuit breaker or relighting the pilot light doesn’t fix the problem, it’s time to call a plumber. Persistent hot water issues could signal a more complex issue like a damaged heating element or a gas leak, both of which require professional attention.

Water Temperature Fluctuations

If your water alternates between too hot and too cold or never gets hot enough, your water heater’s thermostat could be at fault. Sometimes, adjusting the thermostat’s temperature is all it takes to solve the problem.

However, temperature fluctuations can also indicate sediment buildup in the tank, which affects the heater’s ability to work efficiently. As minerals in hard water settle at the bottom of the tank, they create an insulating layer that makes it harder for the heating element to heat the water properly.

When to Call a Plumber: If adjusting the thermostat doesn’t help or if you notice significant sediment buildup, call a plumber to inspect the unit. A professional can flush out the sediment or repair a failing heating element.

Strange Noises from the Water Heater

It’s normal for a water heater to make a slight hum when in operation, but if you hear loud popping, cracking, or rumbling sounds, there may be an issue. These noises are typically caused by sediment buildup in the tank, which traps water underneath it and causes steam bubbles to form. Over time, the sediment can cause the water heater to overheat or wear out the heating element.

When to Call a Plumber: Unusual noises coming from your water heater are a clear sign that something is wrong. If you hear popping or cracking sounds, call a plumber to perform a tank flush or assess whether repairs are needed.

Leaking Water Heater

Leaks are one of the most serious water heater problems. If you notice water pooling around your heater or seeping from the tank, it could indicate corrosion, a loose valve, or a broken pipe.

While some leaks can come from minor issues like loose connections that can be tightened, leaks from the tank itself usually mean it’s time to replace your water heater.

When to Call a Plumber: For any type of water heater leak, it’s best to call a plumber immediately. Even a small leak can cause significant water damage over time and lead to mold growth in your home.

Low Hot Water Pressure

Low water pressure from the hot water tap could be a sign of sediment buildup, but it could also indicate an issue with your home’s plumbing. Sediment or mineral deposits can clog pipes and valves, reducing water flow and making it difficult to maintain proper pressure.

When to Call a Plumber: If your hot water pressure remains low after trying to flush the tank, call a plumber. They can inspect your plumbing system and water heater to identify and resolve the root cause of the issue.
