During the process of remodeling your home, you may be tempted to put a fresh coat of paint on your bathroom walls and leave your old plumbing fixtures in place. You’ve got a leak.

Old faucets and showerheads will naturally be more vulnerable to leaks—luckily, replacing these fixtures is a simple task for an experienced plumber. For leaks that may be harder to detect, start monitoring your water bill and meter for signs of excess water consumption.
Fittings are coming loose.
You may notice that the connections on your plumbing fixtures are stripped, making them impossible to tighten. Or, perhaps the pipe fittings under your bathroom sink keep coming loose, despite your attempts to secure them. When plumbing fixtures become unreliable in this way, it is important to replace them as soon as possible in order to avoid more serious problems down the road. Loose fittings and faulty pipe connections can easily become leaks, making your home more vulnerable to water damage.
Your metal fixtures are in visibly poor condition.
The bathroom sees a greater level of humidity than any other room in the house. For this reason, metal plumbing fixtures may degrade faster in the bathroom than they might in the kitchen. Rust is a definite indicator that your plumbing system is in need of some serious attention. If the fixtures in your bathroom are visibly tarnished or covered in rust, consider inspecting any connecting pipes for condition issues as well. Old fixtures usually mean old pipes, which are much more likely to clog, leak, or burst. If you’re planning on giving your home a new look, make the responsible choice to replace any old pipes as well.
