Bringing in a furry friend may do wonders for your household. They can be your best friend! Sometimes, though, people fail to realize that pets can have a big impact on your plumbing–and vice versa. We realize that may not be the first thing that leaps to mind when you think about owning a pet, but there are actually a few issues to consider! Let’s take a look at how your pet could potentially impact your plumbing.
Taking Baths
Whenever you bathe a furry friend, make sure you’re using drain stoppers in your tub or sink. This will block any animal hair from getting into your drain, causing unwanted blockage and making your life difficult. Many kinds of pets, though especially dogs, tend to shed a lot. If you don’t take this precaution, you’ll soon realize your drain isn’t draining quite as fast as it used to. These problems build up over time so it’s best to just use a drain stopper.
Be Careful With Dogs Digging
You may not realize it, but sometimes your water or sewer lines are as shallow as 18 inches beneath the surface of your lawn. For a dog who loves to dig, it’s not impossible for them to get their paws that deep, rupturing your water line and causing you some serious trouble. If you’re unsure of how deep your lines are beneath the ground, just be sure to keep an eye on a dog who likes to dig.
Avoid Flushing Cat Litter
Some kitty litter out there claims to be “flushable.” Our advice? Just don’t do it. Toilets are designed to work with waste and toilet paper, not kitty litter. While you may be able to get away with it, if you want to avoid a clogged toilet, put the litter in the trash instead.
Keep the Toilet Closed!
Some pets just like to wander on over to your toilet and take a big gulp of toilet water. This is why it’s so important to just leave the lid closed. Not only is it unsanitary, but it can also end up harming your pet. If you’re using cleaners and chemicals to keep your toilet clean, those can have serious negative side effects on your animal friend, so be sure you’re not letting them get in harm’s way.
