Hiring a plumbing service once things go south is typically a good idea. Most of us simply don’t have the knowledge or skills to get the job done ourselves. That said, it’s not always easy to get a plumber out, especially for minor issues that you could have done yourself if only you knew what you were doing. We’re here to arm you with some plumbing tasks that are easy to do yourself and let you know everything you need to do. Before calling your plumber, take a look at these basic plumbing tasks that you may be able to get done yourself.
1. Clearing Drains
If you’re dealing with a very basic drain clog, you may be able to unclog it yourself. However, you don’t want to let the issue accumulate, so if you’re unable to fix it, make sure you bring a professional plumber into the fold. That said, try to avoid using drain cleaners which have harmful chemicals and may cause more issues than its worth. Using a plunger can sometimes clear drains, or you may want to look into an inexpensive plastic drain snake which can do wonders for getting rid of clogged shower drains that are backed up with hair.
2. Clogged Toilets
Most people have everything to deal with a clogged toilet on hand. Of course, everyone is familiar with a basic toilet plunger and how it works. Just make sure you’re creating a seal between the cup of the plunger and the hole in your toilet and give a few sharp pushes. Give your toilet a flush afterwards. If it’s not working, don’t try to force it—you may end up causing a bathroom flood which is much harder to deal with!
3. Cleaning Showerheads
Older showerheads can start to have low water pressure and sometimes this is just a result of the head getting dirty. If so, it’s time to take a few minutes and clean your shower head off. Examine the nozzles on your showerhead and try to massage them with your fingers or a small brush to help remove some of the mineral build up. If all else fails, you can also soak your showerhead in white vinegar for a bit to help clear it all out and then run it through some water to get it as good as new.
